Glass vs Stainless Steel Straws

Are you having a hard time deciding between straws made of glass or stainless steel? If you are choosing between the two, it means you are already heading in the right direction.

Nevertheless, glass straws are a better option. Both choices are better than plastic straws and very durable in addition to both being excellent options for hot and cold drinks

Plastic straws can only be used once, which means they end up in landfill afterward. For some context, in the United States, about 500 million straws made out of plastic are thrown out every day.

Additionally, plastic tends to contain toxins that are not good for the body.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at both types of straws.

When it comes to taste, glass straws are excellent since they do not limit or alter the taste in any way.  Additionally, they feel quite comfortable in your mouth.

More importantly, as we mentioned above, glass straws are very durable despite the material. This is key, as of course, this makes them reusable.

Additionally, cleaning glass straws is very easy because you can see whether they are spotless or not(simply put, transparency makes these hard to pass up).

You can quickly put them in any dishwasher, and make plastic straws less attractive.

On the other hand, for those that think about aesthetics. Glass straws are much more visually appealing than stainless steel no matter what type of container you are using.

Finally, let’s not forget that glass is heat resistant (conductivity and durability are often talked about with straw options), so you can drink both cold or hot drinks(as we mentioned above).

Therefore, as far as we are concerned, this is hands down the eco-friendly option, you should be going with to better help mother nature.

Remember, glass is completely recyclable, and no matter how often it is recycled, it will always retain its quality.  Recycling is part of the 5R’s, which makes glass even more appealing.

Here are some excellent statistics from

  • You can substitute recycled glass for about 95% of raw materials.
  • For every ton of glass we recycle, we are saving over a ton of natural resources.

You can see why we like the glass option. It is also important to remember that we do a lot of our consumption outside of our homes.

Therefore, sometimes we may not be able to control the type of straws we get.

Hence, it is essential to do so at home or work, or anywhere else where we have available options.

Are Glass Straws Safe?

Glass straws are safe. It is quite common to see people with braces or dental problems loving glass straws. Namely, because they don’t succumb by melting or warping as a plastic straw do.

Reusable straws are affordable, durable, good for the environment, and the solution going forward.

Stainless Steel Straws

Stainless steel straws are also a significant upgrade to plastic straws. One of the two reusable straw options that should see continued use going forward.

These straws don’t have much going against them when you think of the pros and cons. These reusable straws are very easy to clean, in addition to being dishwasher safe.

Additionally, they come in different shapes and sizes. And, while they are not as visually appealing as glass straws, they are still quite attractive to a lot of people who love shine.  Another reason to avoid those plastic straws.

We also love the fact that these straws are very affordable. We often get questions about whether going zero waste can increase your household’s bills; rest assured, this is not the case when we talk about straw alternatives.

In terms of conductivity, stainless steel is not a good conductor of heat, so you can easily use them to drink hot or cold beverages.

Finally, it is safe to say that the durability of stainless steel straws is as excellent as it can get.  In that same regard, remember that stainless steel is quite easy to recycle.

If you have any misgivings about steel, then make sure you buy straws that are food-grade stainless steel.

Besides, most of these straws include a cleaning brush. If you are going to use these continuously, then make sure whatever option you go with includes a cleaning brush.

Are Silicone Or Metal Straws Better?

Silicone straws are a bit tricky. While the conductivity in regards to hot and cold should not be a problem, indeed, the feel of silicone in your mouth won’t do you any favors.

Nevertheless, it can be cleaned with most brushes.

If chewing your straws, for example, is one of your habits, then silicone straws are everything you want in a straw.

Nevertheless, when compared to glass straws, silicon starts breaking down after a few years.

It is true that silicone has been considered lately as an excellent material for reusable straws thanks to the fact that it does not crack or peel, in addition to a good option for both hot and cold drinks.

Nevertheless, it is still not as good as going with glass.

In regards to metal straws, please remember that their temperature can go in either extreme (cold or hot) really fast depending on what you are drinking, in addition to not being good for your dental health.

If durability is the main issue for you, and glass straws are not convincing you, go with stainless steel.

The bottom line, you should definitely stick to glass or stainless steel. AS long as you avoid plastic in helping spread why Zero waste is important, then we all win.

And, if you still want other options, then you can also take a look at bamboo straws.

Although suitable for the environment, the bamboo alternative will alter the taste of your drinks.

Additionally, they feel a bit heavy on the mouth. Moreover, they are not as durable as glass or metal options.
