Is Nyx Vegan & Cruelty-Free? What To Know About Their Cosmetics

When talking about affordable and cruelty-free makeup brands, you can’t leave NYX out of the conversation. NYX Cosmetics are easily accessible in drugstores and can fit even the tightest budget.

And although their cruelty-free status mayalredy have been established in the general consumer population, we’re left to wonder, is NYX cruelty-free and vegan? Or do their products still contain animal-derived ingredients?

Before we launch deep into things, here’s a quick overview of what we are about to cover:

  • Are NYX Cosmetics vegan? No. However, there are plenty of NYX vegan products, which we will list below.
  • Is NYX cruelty-free? Yes! NYX is certified free of any animal testing (at all levels) by PETA.
  • Is NYX sold in China? Absolutely not. Since NYX is cruelty-free, none of its products are sold in China. However, some NYX products may be made in the country.
  • Does NYX have a parent company? NYX was acquired by their current parent company L’Oreal in 2014. It’s worth noting that L’Oreal is not cruelty-free, which may affect your decision to buy from the brand.
  • Is NYX organic? No, NYX is not organic. They do not explicitly state that the products and the brand itself are organic, so no products in any of their collections can be considered as such.
  • Is NYX sustainable and ethical? NYX excels in certain areas of sustainability and ethics yet falls flat in other aspects. However, given their size and reach, they are much better than the industry average.

For your convenience, we also included the NYX vegan product list. NYX always indicates if a product is vegan, so you’ll easily be able to browse through their collection.

We are happy to share that, yes, NYX is indeed cruelty-free and none of their products are tested on animals. Attached is their animal testing policy:

“NYX Professional Makeup is certified and acknowledged by PETA as a cruelty-free brand. We are committed to producing cruelty-free cosmetics. We do not test any of our products on animals.”

NYX Cosmetics does not test any of its products on animals anywhere in the world, even by third parties. They also do not sell in markets where animal testing is required by law, as is the case in Mainland China.

So no worries, you can happily add NYX to your growing list of cruelty-free brands

Is NYX Owned By A Parent Company?

NYX is owned by cosmetic giant L’Oreal since its acquisition in 2014.

NYX having a parent company may factor into your decision to support them as L’Oreal is not cruelty-free. Hence, not vegan-friendly. If you want to know more about the parent’s cruelty-free status, check out our deep dive on L’Oreal here.

Is NYX Vegan?

Unfortunately, NYX is not a vegan brand. To be vegan, a brand needs to have absolutely no animal or animal by-products in anything they make or sell. This means no beeswax, no honey, no lanolin, no animal-based dyes, among others.

Any brand considered vegan should also be completely cruelty-free.

NYX is not vegan because it has some products in its collections made with animal-derived ingredients, one way or another. However, they do have a lot of vegan options, and since they are cruelty-free, we would consider them a vegan-friendly brand.

Is NYX Ethical And Sustainable?

And yet, despite knowing these good things about NYX Cosmetics, we still have to talk about how they function in terms of ethics and sustainability.

Currently, NYX does not market itself as a sustainable brand. They don’t have specific measures for ensuring that they operate sustainably, such as better packaging or low waste production initiatives.

NYX Professional Makeup also doesn’t disclose where exactly their products are made, but the general presumption is that their products are manufactured all over the globe.

However, what can be appreciated from NYX is the community they foster. They are proud of being a brand that doesn’t condone animal testing, and they actively try to expand their line of NYX vegan products. They also believe in makeup artistry for all and support the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles.

Although NYX may not check all the marks and have the same values we look for at Puratium, they’re still doing quite well on some fronts.

That said, we do look forward to the day when NYX becomes more transparent about its production process and sourcing!

Would We Recommend NYX?

Given all the information we’ve covered so far, would NYX make it on the list of cruelty-free beauty brands to trust?

For the record, we commend NYX for putting out very affordable and high-quality beauty products in the market. Our favorite vegan and cruelty-free brands tend to be more on the high end of the price spectrum (although that is for a reason), and we’re glad to see an established beauty company like NYX exceed industry expectations.

And to an extent, we would recommend them! Especially if you’re on a budget and can only get your hands on what’s available locally.

On that note however, there are also so many cruelty-free, vegan brands out there that can give you what NYX does and more!

For instance, we’ve reviewed many brands that sell items that compete quite well with some of NYX’s products and are objectively better on an ethics and sustainability point of view. For this, you might want to check out our guide on vegan concealer.

If you are in the market for new makeup products and think you can get your hands on more sustainable ones, we highly suggest doing so.

Final Thoughts

And there you have all you need to know about whether NYX is cruelty-free and vegan, we understand how challenging it can be for us makeup lovers to find the right brands to trust, and our guides try to make it as easy as possible to know where you can buy cruelty-free, vegan products.

If you’re looking for all sorts of beauty items, from matte primer and strobing cream to makeup remover and bb cream, NYX has you covered.

And with their numerous vegan options and highly affordable products, there are plenty of items you’ll be able to find at NYX.

Nevertheless, we implore you to shop responsibly. While seasonal releases of beautiful makeup palettes can be tempting, there’s nothing better than being creative while staying true to our values of slow beauty.
