Is Supergoop Cruelty Free And Worthy Of Our Trust?

Founded pretty recently (in 2007), Supergoop! is the industry leader in creating reef-safe sunscreen made with the best, clean ingredients.

Although they are mainly a sunscreen enterprise, they now have countless other products on their roster that will give you more than enough UV protection in your daily routine. They even make makeup!

Noting that, many have wondered about the brand’s cruelty free status. Is Supergoop cruelty free? Is Supergoop vegan? We hope to answer some of the frequently asked questions surrounding the topic.

  • Does Supergoop test on animals? No. Supergoop does not test on animals at all levels of production.

Defining Cruelty Free

The conversation surrounding cruelty free cosmetics is always complex. People have individual beliefs and perceive the term differently.

Generally, though, cruelty free products are those made without any animal testing, at all times during the production process. This means no animal testing on the ingredients, formula, and final product. Furthermore, the term means that a product is not sold in locations where products are still tested on animals as required by law.

On the other hand, a company is cruelty free if it does not perform any animal testing on all levels and accounts. It is not enough to forgo animal testing themselves. They must not hire or commission third parties to do the testing for them.

On a deeper level, some people believe that products can only be cruelty free if they contain no animal ingredients. Some might only buy from brands with a cruelty free parent company (more on this later).

All that said, we will be using the general definition of cruelty free in crafting our conclusion for this topic. You may also find some of our other cruelty free guides helpful in understanding the topic: CeraVe, Vaseline, or Nivea, to name just a few.

Does Supergoop Conduct Animal Testing?

As one of the better-known sunscreen brands, we are happy to announce that Supergoop does not conduct tests on animals.

They clearly indicate on their website that they do not do any tests on animals, and they never have! However, we know this isn’t nearly enough to prove that the business is cruelty free.

To find more proof, let’s take a look at their full animal testing policy.

What Is Supergoop's Animal Testing Policy?

Supergoop does not have a dedicated animal testing policy, but the relevant answer is found in their FAQs section.

“Supergoop is Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty free. We’ve never conducted, commissioned or paid for any tests on animals when it comes to ingredients, formulations or finished products, and we promise never to do so in the future!”

And, there we have it! Supergoop does not test on animals themselves, nor do they hire or commission anybody to do the testing for them. The statement also encompasses ingredients and formulations, so we know every step of the production process is cruelty free.

Moreover, Supergoop is Leaping Bunny-certified! This guarantees that their products are not tested on animals, and they follow all the requisites needed to be qualified for certification.

From all of this, it is clear that Supergoop is against animal testing of all forms and will not sanction anything against that philosophy.

Curious about Supergoop’s vegan status?

Sadly, no. Supergoop is not a vegan brand. However, most of their items are vegan products. We even featured them on our guide on vegan sunscreen.

As of the moment, only 2 Supergoop products are not vegan:

  • 100% Mineral Sunscreen Stick (Beeswax)
  • Sunnyscreen™ 100% Mineral Stick (Beeswax)

Other than those two, the brand’s products are all free from animal-derived ingredients, and hence, vegan.

Some products previously containing beeswax – namely the Play Lip Balms – have recently been reformulated. If you were watching out for these products, we’re happy to share that they’re now vegan!

They have also recently reformulated their Handscreen SPF 40, which previously contained an enzyme from bovine milk.

Some of our other favorite cruelty free and vegan products from Supergoop are their

  • Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 with Sunflower Extract
  • Play Everyday Lotion SPF 30 with Sunflower Extract
  • Bright Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40
  • Play Antioxidant Body Mist SPF 50 with Vitamin C
  • Play Antioxidant Body Mist SPF 30 with Vitamin C
  • Healthy Glow Sunless Tan
  • Lipscreen SPF 40

They have plenty of other vegan products, incorporating lovely ingredients like green tea extract and blue sea kale in their formulas.

Is Supergoop Sold In Mainland China?

We previously mentioned that Supergoop is already certified cruelty free. But why are there still many people asking if the business truly doesn’t test on animals?

Well, the conflicting opinions online on Supergoop’s status boil down to whether or Supergoop products are sold in Mainland China.

Why Is Selling In Mainland China Important?

For the longest time, the safety assessments for cosmetic products sold physically in Mainland China required animal testing. This regulation applies to foreign brands wishing to sell in-store in China.

It does not apply to online stores that sell directly to the customer. So long as the foreign brand wants to sell physically in China, testing is necessary.

In 2021, this policy was lifted for general cosmetics such as shampoos, conditioners, and body wash provided the business can comply with the requirements. However, the animal testing policy remains for special use cosmetics.

Incidentally, special use cosmetics include sunscreen, and Supergoop’s product line contains plenty of sunscreens. This means selling in China would be the ultimate indication that Supergoop is not cruelty free.

So, Is Supergoop Sold In China?

This is where it gets a little more complicated. Recently, there have been photos of Supergoop putting up shop in a location in China. Some online sources claim that Supergoop is no longer CF because of this.

It’s an intriguing statement because Supergoop actually has a relevant certification. Does this mean the certifying body was wrong?

Frankly, certifying bodies aren’t infallible. There are some instances when the lack of regular audits leads to misinformation and inaccuracy.

However, that isn’t the case with Supergoop To clear up the issue, we sent them an email to find out if they sell in China or not. This was their response:

“To spread our mission of SPF every day worldwide, we sell cross-border digitally in China, which does not require animal testing. Our physical distribution in China does not sell directly or allow takeaway products of any kind. While we do have display products in-store, removing them for any reason – testing included – is illegal. There is absolutely no right to post-market animal testing for display products.”

This tells us that they DO have a physical location in China, which is why the photos are cropping up online.

However, their location in China does not operate in a way that customers can buy from them. This means no direct selling, thus no animal testing.

Does Supergoop Have A Parent Company?

A brand’s parent company is often a point of contention in these discussions. Buying from a cruelty free brand is excellent! But what if your money eventually ends up in a corporation that doesn’t reflect your respect for animals?

This is why conscious buyers must consider if their favorite skincare products eventually put profits in a company that still tests on animals.

However, this is primarily a personal decision. Some of you might think it’s alright, while some won’t. Either choice is entirely up to you, and we’re not here to judge your choice.

Fortunately, though, Supergoop is privately-owned and is not held by a parent corporation. This means they have not been acquired or bought by any larger company, making them free of any animal testing.

Final Thoughts

So, is Supergoop cruelty free? Yes! We think they are. We understand that so many of us might be skeptical in terms of cruelty free and vegan labels. Trust is difficult to find in the cosmetics industry, where so many brands actively greenwash their products.

But in this case, all evidence points to the brand being cruelty free. Although they have a location in China, they have made it perfectly clear that it is not intended for selling takeaway products.

To add, they also have the Leaping Bunny certification. Some concerned individuals have already brought this matter to the organization, and they have confirmed that Supergoop! products are still not tested on animals.

The Leaping Bunny is one of the more trusted certifications—being that they conduct regular audits on the companies they certify.

All in all, you can rest assured that your favorite Unseen Sunscreen or Play Lip Balm did not hurt any animals during production. How great is that?
